IHSPA names 3 WSS staffers emerging journalists, 2 staffers place in on-the-spot news writing contest

The Iowa High School Press Association named Allie Biscupski ’17, Michael Moonjely ’17 and Isabelle Robles ’17 as three of the 10 Emerging Journalists in the state at its high school journalism conference at The University of Iowa on Oct. 29. This program serves to acknowledge and encourage high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors who demonstrate promise in journalism.

West Side Story staffers also landed awards in the IHSPA on-the-spot contests. Shawn Thacker ’18 won second place in the news writing category and Prateek Raikwar ’18 won third place.

The annual IHSPA conference drew 771 Iowa journalism students, advisers and experts to the Iowa Memorial Union downtown. Students participated in sessions dedicated to anything from covering controversial topics to developing social media strategies in the newsroom. The keynote speaker was McKinney Texas yearbook adviser Lori Oglesbee.
