Shattering the state records for the first and last event of the IHSAA State Swim Meet, the boys swim team won state for the second year in a row in Marshalltown on Feb. 14.
Starting off the meet strong, Mark McGlaughlin ’17, Matt Anderson ’16 , Oliver Martin ’18 and Will Scott ’17 won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.39.
Coached by Rob Miecznikowski, the trojans won seven of the 11 events. The duo of distance and sprint freestylers Aidan Keen ’17 and McGlaughlin captured individual victories. Keen placed first in both the 200 and 500 freestyle while McGlaughlin won the 50 and 100 freestyle. Continuing the dominance in the relays Scott, Anderson, Martin and Keen won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:24.75. In addition, Scott finished three swimmers behind Keen in the 500 and Martin touched fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Finishing the meet off with an All-American time of 3:02.98, McGlaughlin, Martin, Scott and Keen worked together to win the event and smash the previous 400 free relay record by about three seconds. They won the event by a sizable margin of about six seconds in front of West Des Moines Valley.
The podium was a familiar place for the swimmers as they celebrated the second year as state champions. Keen took advantage of the moment, and asked Cedar Rapids Kennedy student Brooke Timmerman to prom while on the podium during the awards ceremony.
The Iowa High School Swimming Coaches Association awarded Miecznikowski the Boys Swimming Coach of the Year.
Jumping into the pool after the event, the coaching staff celebrated the end of another successful season.
