City
Nearing the end of their regular season, the girls team traveled to compete against cross-town rival City High May 1. The meet, usually held alongside the boys’ City/West matchup at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex, was moved to City High because construction of the Little Hawks’ courts was finished this summer.
Last year, the Trojans had a strong showing against City High, winning their regular season meet 7-2, and this year was no different. After clinching the match in singles, West improved their regular season record to 10-1.
In singles, Marie Stier ’25 and Elsie Gross ’27 finished their matches quickly with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-0 scores, respectively. Shortly after, Grace Wang ’27 and Iris Vasi ’28 won their matches at 4 and 3 Singles. Following their wins, Sasha Postnikov ’25 battled in a tough match at 1 Singles, but ultimately lost to City’s Amelia Wolfe. A 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win by Sophie Singh ’27 closed out singles and clinched the meet for West, in a clean sweep in under an hour and a half.
Under cloudy skies, the usual doubles scoring — best of three 6-game sets — was switched for one 8-game pro set. Though West clinched the meet in singles, the team continued their winning streak by sweeping all three doubles matches. At 2 Doubles, Vasi/Wang reunited, having been separated in doubles since the Cedar Falls meet April 22, and won their match 8-4. Gross/Claire Hahn ’25 at 3 Doubles came through in their match 9-7 after being down 6-7.

Waterloo West
Last year, West competed well against Waterloo West with 5-4 and 5-1 wins during the regular season and team regionals, respectively. This year, the Trojans came prepared to continue their strong showings.
In singles, the bottom of the lineup finished their matches quickly, with a 6-0, 6-0 win by Wang and 6-0, 6-1 wins by Stier and Gross. Postnikov followed shortly after with a hard-fought 6-2, 6-2 win. Singh ’27, after a long match against Waterloo West’s Janet Toe, lost her match at 3 Singles. Vasi closed out singles and clinched the meet for West with a tough 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) match at 2 Singles.
Continuing their doubles domination, West swept all three doubles matches following their wins in singles. 3 Doubles (Gross/Singh) made quick work of their match, winning their match 6-2, 6-0. After closely contested matches at 1 and 2 Doubles, both teams pulled through to secure the wins for West.

West will return to the courts May 6 to compete at Cedar Rapids Washington. The matchup is big for the Trojans; West and Washington have competed in close matches the last two years, with Washington knocking West out of the 2023 state tournament and West beating Washington last year in the state third-place matchup. Additionally, Head Coach Nina Marquardt coached for the Warriors for two years before coaching for West this year. Later this week, West will host Linn-Mar for their final match of the regular season May 8.
