Following a tough 2-7 loss to Cedar Rapids Washington April 17, the girls tennis team bounced back with a win over cross-town rival Liberty High at the West High tennis courts April 18. Both teams had a 4-1 record entering the matchup, so this win improved West’s season record to 5-1.

Luther College signee Jay Mascardo ’23 secured a key singles win at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1. Both Maggie Shin ’24 and Mohana Sunkara ’23, at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots respectively, came back after losing their first sets to win clutch tiebreakers, helping West to enter doubles ahead 4-2.

The Trojans needed only one more victory to win the meet, and that came early with a 6-2, 6-0 win from the doubles duo of Mascardo and Shin. After two more thrilling doubles matches, West ended the meet with a 6-3 triumph over Liberty. Catch the girls tennis team back in action at the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex where they will face off with other cross-town rival City High April 20 at 4 p.m.
