On Dec. 5- 7, Theatre West performed “Chicago,” a jazzy musical set in the Roaring Twenties featuring main characters Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly. In order to save face during their murder trials, both Roxie and Velma, played by Mary Danielle Gross ’25 and Ella Vakiner ’25, compete for the services of a tricky lawyer named Billy Flynn. Billy, played by Luke Reimer ’27, promises the girls that he will help them to become celebrities, leading Roxie and Velma to turn against each other and those around them in order to obtain fame.
Although putting on a musical may not seem like a difficult task, so much happens behind the curtain. After hours of memorizing lines, drilling the set and tailoring costumes, “Chicago” was ready to be shown to the crowd. From bonding over building in the shop to making new friends during rehearsals, the connections created while working on “Chicago” are what helped it to achieve success.
Theatre West will be back on stage April 10-12 performing the spring musical, “The Sound of Music.” To view the cast list or get ticket information, you can visit Theatre West’s website.
