West loses in a double header against City High
February 16, 2016
Last Friday, both West High’s girls and boys basketball faced off against crosstown rival the City High Little Hawks in a double header at City High.
On the girls side, the game was controlled by City’s dynamic duo of Ashley and Courtney Joens who combined for 38 points in the 57-41 win for the third ranked team in Class 5A.
The Women of Troy seemed overwhelmed by the barrage of three pointers taken by City, the majority of which went in, and were unable to respond on the other side of the ball. Logan Cook ’18 led the Trojans in scoring with 13 on the night, but it turned out to not be enough as they faced their second loss to the Little Hawks this year, the first of which was a double overtime loss at West.
On the boys side, the Trojans lost in what some would call an upset. West came in ranked second in the state and on a long win streak of eight games before the loss on Friday night. Until Friday, they had a 15 game long win streak against City High.
City came out with an energy on the floor that matched the much rowdier student section City boasted.
They had great play from their seniors, especially three point shooting for Henry Mulligan and Nile Ringen.
West’s inability to hit their three pointers (seven for 27 on the night) and playing uncharastically bad Trojan defense factored into the 63-53 loss.
