Outstanding, kind, devoted and best were only some of the words shared by West High staff and students in the commons on the afternoon of Sept. 13. These phrases were all directed towards West High custodian Daniel Carlos as he received the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Shine Award.

“Daniel works efficiently. He picks up every piece of garbage on the floor with his hands every night,” said West High math teacher Julie Kennebeck, one of three teacher nominators. “He is top notch, a man who is proud to be doing what he is doing, and a super pleasant man to have a daily conversation with. He is so deserving of this award.”

The award recognizes staff who positively influence, inspire and make a lasting impact on those they work with every day, according to the ICCSD. When chosen, the staff member receives a recognition ceremony in their workplace, a tshirt and a golden apple.
