Women of Troy to face crosstown rivals in state championship
On Thurs., March 1, the girls basketball team headed up to the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines to face off against Indianola in the semifinal round of the state championships.
West defeated Indianola 58-45 to advance to the state championship’s final round against City High. Rachael Saunders ’18 led the Women of Troy with 13 points followed by Cailyn Morgan ’19 with 11 points.
When asked what it is like going to the championship round Emma Koch ’19 said, “It’s an amazing feeling to be playing for the state championship. Our team has worked extremely hard since our loss in the [semifinals] last year and it’s great to see all of that work paying off. It’s crazy that we’re playing City and it really shows the talent in Iowa City. It’ll be a great game with a great atmosphere and both teams will be giving it their all.”
The crosstown rivals will battle at 6 p.m. on Fri., March 2. There will be pep buses going to the game, and tickets will cost $10. West High will be dismissing at 3 p.m. and will follow a Thursday schedule. The pep buses will leave West at 3:15 p.m. Tickets for the game are on sale online or can be purchased at the Wells Fargo Arena, but are not on sale at West.
