The West High math team had a strong finish yesterday at the Madison Area Math League Tournament, placing varsity teams 2nd and 3rd.
The West High team Fast Five plus 3, the third string varsity team surprised many with a second place finish. The team, lead by team captain Rachel Hegeman ’12, missed just one question in the team round.
“Most of us hadn’t been to many math tournaments before, so it was a bit surprising,” said team member Gal Wald ’12. “We mostly were just going to miss some school, but I guess it worked out well.”
The Trojans also took home several individual awards, with Dan Rothman ’12, Trevor Clinkenbeard ’13, Ben Sheff ’13, Anna Furlong ’14 and Daniel Seabra ’12 all tied for first place with perfect scores. Hilah Kohen ’14, Flora Yen ’13 and Reed Johnson ’12 all came in second place while Ji-Eun Choi ’13 came in third.
West High’s first string varsity team, Ugly Suits came in third place.
“I’m really proud of our performance,” said Hegeman. “We had to overcome a lot of adversity, but through sheer hard work and perseverance we were able to achieve success.”
