Star reviews: Marvel’s new movie ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ was surprisingly successful
Eleanor Weitz ’24 and Daaman Durnev ’24 discuss Marvel’s newest hit movie “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” in a new episode of Star Reviews.
“Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was supposed to fail. Instead, it became one of the highest grossing films of 2021. It brought in 94 million dollars during its opening weekend, breaking the all time record for highest grossing film on Labor Day weekend. Critics predicted that this film would tank based on the date of release and the previous box office failure of Marvel’s “Black Widow” but Marvel surprised everyone with a successful release. Shang Chi also makes history as Marvel’s first ever Asian superhero. Diversity is refreshingly clear and present in this movie with the absence of stereotypes often presented in Asian characters. In the podcast below we discuss all of the interesting plot points and boundaries broken by this unforgettable new movie.
