Just a quick drive down the road from West High, seven West journalists from West Side Story and Trojan Epic attended the Iowa football media day on Nov. 19. There, Ashlyn Brady ’25, Kellen Craig ’26, Lucy Gardner ’26, Gianna Liu ’25, Keith Moody ’25, Celia Sadewasser ’26 and Tyler Shane ’26 got the opportunity to observe professional journalists interviewing and filming the players.
Additionally, Gardner and Moody got the chance to sit in on the coach’s press conference held after the player interviews. After the press conference, they also got the opportunity to speak with head coach Kirk Ferentz.
The media day, held at the Hansen Football Performance Center in Iowa City, was an opportunity presented by the Iowa High School Press Association and the University of Iowa Athletics Department. As part of IHSPA’s new sports media experiences, West journalists got the opportunity to experience what a media day looks like and learn from experts in the field of sports journalism.
West journalists not only observed professional journalists from around the community and fellow student journalists from the University of Iowa, but they got the chance to ask a few of their own questions. Speaking with players including running back Kaleb Johnson, tight end Luke Lachey and linebacker Nick Jackson about the bye week and their upcoming game against Maryland on Nov. 23, students got the full media day experience.
