On May 1, West High’s varsity girls soccer team

On May 1, West High’s varsity girls soccer team played Western Dubuque during West’s girls senior night. Working their way through a competitive match, West won the game 7-0. After the match, each senior player was recognized and thanked for their years of athletic participation at West.

Justin Avila '25, Randale Kelly '25, Cole Krutzfel

Justin Avila '25, Randale Kelly '25, Cole Krutzfeldt '25, Alexander Pierce '26 and Matthew Tran '27 traveled to Wells Fargo Arena Feb. 19-22 to compete at the boys state wrestling tournament. Avila took home the state title at 150 lbs while Pierce finished second at 113 lbs. Krutzfeldt placed 5th at 138 lbs and Tran placed 6th at 120 lbs.

On Feb. 14 and 15, the Trojan-Bolts competed in the boys swimming state championships, securing second place overall. The Trojan-Bolts placed well in a plethora of events, with Hayden Hakes ’25 being named State Athlete of the Year.

Join the girls basketball team tonight at the West High home courts as they face off against the Kennedy Cougars in their final home game of the season. Seniors Ava Bruxvoort, Sophia Bodin, Elle Barnett and Makayla Bryant (not pictured) will be honored for their contributions to West Athletics.

Senior Trinity Myers competed in the girls state wrestling tournament on Feb. 6, finishing with a 1-2 record. Unfortunately, without a winning record, she was unable to compete on the second day, ending the final tournament of her high school wrestling career. To read more click on the link in the bio.

Seniors Moustafa Tiea, Megan O’Neil and Jack Wallace officially signed their commitment letters on Feb. 6, to continue their athletic and academic careers in college. The three celebrated with family and friends in the West High commons; here are a few photos from the event.

On Jan. 17, the boys basketball team prevailed against Prairie at Iowa City West High School. After finishing the first quarter down 17-16, the Trojans maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the game, winning 66-55.

On Nov. 16, after making it through the previous days preliminary finals, West High’s girls swim team had several talented swimmers such as Hannah Geng ‘27, Hannah Longmire ‘26, Gretchen Gerkie ‘28 and Averie Bliskemper ‘25 participate in the state finals. During these finals, Longmire ‘26 finished first in the para 50-yard freestyle, second in the para 100-yard freestyle and Geng ‘27 placed fifth overall in the 100-yard freestyle.

On Oct. 26 the girls swim team traveled across town to Mercer Park Aquatic Center to compete in the MVC swimming championship. The Trojan Bolts secured a second place finish with 321 points.

On Oct. 24, the girls varsity volleyball team play

On Oct. 24, the girls varsity volleyball team played Marshalltown in an electrifying semifinal game to determine who would go head-to-head against Dowling Catholic on Oct. 29 for the regional finals against Dowling Catholic. Despite it being a tough match, West High won the match in three sets, securing their road to the championship game.

On Oct. 18 during senior appreciation night, West

On Oct. 18 during senior appreciation night, West High’s 14th ranked football team went head to head against 3rd ranked Pleasant Valley. The game was heated and the student sections were buzzing, but despite the intense game and being the underdogs, West pulled out a stunning upset win against Pleasant in a 49-35 victory. On Oct. 3rd at West High School, the senior night volleyball game was played against rivals West High and ranked City High. After a back in fourth match and high flying emotions, West High’s varsity girls won the match in the fifth set 15 - 9 and took home The Spike trophy as their reward for their hard earned victory.

On Monday night, juniors and seniors competed in the annual Trojan games. The juniors prevailed in volleyball, winning two out of three sets, but the seniors won powderpuff with a score of 22-14.

On Sept. 12, Moustafa Tiea ‘25, Jack Eastvold ‘26 and Jake Weiler ‘28 had some of the many outstanding performances at the Seminole Valley Cedar Rapids meet. Tiea came in first for varsity, Eastvold in third for JV, and Weiler in fifth for the sophomore/freshman race.
