Timeline of the Iowa Raptor Project

University of Iowa begins leasing land

January 1, 1958

After the Coralville Dam was built in 1958, the US Government gained control of the Lake MacBride land and leased it to the University of Iowa. The land is named the MacBride Field Campus.

Transferal of MacBride land lease

January 1, 1985

The MacBride land lease is transferred from Continuing Education at the university to Recreational Services. It is renamed the MacBride Nature Recreation Area.

Founding of the Iowa Raptor Project

January 1, 1985

Recreational Services promises to create new programs within the Macbride Nature Recreation Area and make it more accessible. The Iowa Raptor project is created as a raptor rehabilitation and education program, with Kirkwood Community College as a partner in rehabilitation.

Founding of Iowa Wildlife Camps

January 1, 1991

Iowa Wildlife camps are created at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area. The camps use raptors as convey messages of conservation. 

Founding of School of the Wild

January 1, 1998

School of the Wild is created to share messages of conservation with students in the Iowa City School district. The weeklong experience also allows University of Iowa College of Education students to gain practicum experience.

End of Kirkwood Community College Support

January 1, 2015

Kirkwood Community College ends their support of the Iowa Raptor Projects raptor rehabilitation. As such, Iowa Raptor Project refocuses on research and education. Kirkwood still works with University of Iowa in this goal.

UI WILD moves to the College of Education

January 1, 2021

UI WILD programs move from Recreational Services at the University of Iowa to the College of Education to continue to allow for research and education.

Land lease committee decision due

May 31, 2025

By the end of May, the committee discussing whether to renew the land lease will submit their decision.

End of current land lease

June 30, 2029

The current lease to the University of Iowa College of Education from the US Army Corp of Engineers runs through June 30, 2029.
