On Feb. 2, the University of Iowa’s Chinese Student Scholar Association held a Lunar New Year event at the IMU from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to celebrate the year of the snake. The event included fun games, face painting, traditional food and amazing performances.
One of the performers of the night was the West High Kpoppies, dancing along to songs like Lisa’s “Rockstar”, Aspea’s “Drama” and Blackpink’s cover of “Too Hot”. This was the Kpoppies’ first performance of the 2024-25 school year and was certainly a night filled with memories.
“It was such a fun experience, especially since it was our first time performing this year,” club leader Jessie Li ’25 said. The Kpoppies have been practicing their set since the start of September. They often stayed late after school to get their steps right.
Li states her favorite part of the performance was backstage with the rest of her group. “Feeling the adrenaline and being with my team; I love this feeling of friendship,” Li said.
The Kpoppies’ next performance is at Iowa City West Walk it Out on March 26. Walk it Out is a cultural event where many different cultures get to perform dances and show off traditional clothing. It is one of West’s biggest events of the school year.
Last year, the Kpoppies garnered a lot of love and support for their performance at Walk It Out. The Kpoppies consider this their biggest performance because of the number of people present. “I’m looking forward to performing at school this time because we didn’t get to perform at the pep rally back in October,” Li said.
The UICSSA Lunar New Year performance marks the Kpoppies road ahead.
