While the rest of West High spent spring break recovering from tests and relaxing before school started again, the girls soccer team spent their days practicing for their upcoming season, with morning and afternoon practice every weekday. Players were expected to assist in setting up goalposts, bringing out balls and even clearing out imposing track hurdles.
The large number of participants were split into two groups, green and orange, and then led through stretching, drills and scrimmaging during their afternoon practices. They also spent multiple mornings completing long-distance runs around Terry Trueblood. At their last spring break practice Friday, Coach Zach Serovy briefed the girls on what the actual tryouts would be like.
Tryout day came quickly for the athletes, and Monday, March 24, was spent playing for their spot on one of the three girls soccer teams we have here at West: Varsity, Junior Varsity 1 and Junior Varsity 2. Coaches Mick Dickinson, Zach Serovy, Emma Kozicki and Carlin Morsch directed the girls during tryouts, from right after school at 4:15 to around 6:30. The final teams have been out for nearly a week now. Pictures taken during spring break practices and tryout day show the process of becoming a part of West’s growing girls soccer community.
