On Tuesday, April 22, the Iowa City West girls soccer team faced off against the Wahlert Catholic Golden Eagles at home. The Eagles entered the game with a 3-1-1 record, and the Trojans came in with a 3-2-1 record. Tensions were high as both teams hoped to maintain their winning records.
Within the first half, the Women of Troy took an early 3-0 lead. Lauryn Hynek ’26 put the first goal on the board, beginning the Trojans’ offensive dominance. With two more goals from Anna Goska ’26 and Paz Martinez ’25, the Trojans had a comfortable lead going into the second half.
Entering the second half, the Trojans had goals to extend their lead. By combining more and learning how to adjust to the rainy conditions, the Trojans tallied two more goals in the early second half. After a corner kick and a handball in the box, Wahlert had a penalty kick against West and scored their first goal of the game. After a scoreless 20 minutes, the Trojans tallied three more goals within the last 10 minutes. Freshman Sofia Fuentes had two goals in the last five minutes alone, finishing the game as the leading scorer with three goals.
Ending the game with an 8-1 victory, the Trojans add another win as they prepare to face off against crosstown rivals, City High, on April 24.
