As the 2024-25 school year heads into the final stretch, take a victory lap by looking back on the Trojans’ top five sports moments.

Boys swim places second at state

After performing strongly throughout the regular season, the Trojan Bolts competed at the boys state swimming championship Feb. 14-15 at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City. The team placed second overall with a total of 181 points. Olympic Trials qualifier and Arizona State University commit Hayden Hakes ’25 successfully concluded his final meet as a Trojan, placing first in both the 200-meter freestyle and 500-meter freestyle with times of 1:37.29 and 4:25.54, respectively. Hakes was also named the Iowa High School Athletic Association Co-Athlete of the Year.

Football celebrates 100th home win

To cap off their regular season on senior night Oct. 18, the 14th-ranked Trojans upset third-ranked Pleasant Valley 49-35 at Trojan Field, marking their 100th home win. Jack Wallace ’25 had an outstanding game, passing five touchdowns and completing 22 out of 27 passes for 373 passing yards. Additionally, Mason Woods ’25 had an impressive showing with an 80-yard touchdown and 212 receiving yards. Illuminated by fireworks, the Trojan marching band and other sports teams joined the football team to celebrate and conclude senior night.

Volleyball wins the spike against City

In the annual Battle for the Spike, the Trojans prevailed against 10th-ranked City High in a five-set upset at West High Oct. 3. After falling to the Little Hawks in 2023, the team came back stronger than ever, with 32 kills from Sophia Austen ’27, many of which were assisted by Lila Eastvold ’27, who had 58 assists. Combined with Ava Bruxvoort ’25 and Audrey Small ’28, who contributed 16 and 11 kills, respectively, the Trojans garnered a 66-43 kill advantage, allowing them to secure the win.

Justin Avila ’25 wins state wrestling

Five Trojans traveled to Des Moines Feb. 18-22 for the state wrestling meet. Wrestlers Alexander Pierce ’26 (113lb), Matthew Tran ’27 (120lb), Cole Krutzfeldt ’25 (138lb), Justin Avila ’25 (150lb) and Randale Kelly ’25 (285lb) competed at the state meet, with exceptional performance from Pierce, Krutzfeldt and Tran, who took runner-up, fifth and sixth, respectively. Ultimately, Avila secured a 9-7 decision over Ames’ Jabari Hinson, clinching the championship to round out his Trojan wrestling career.

Track and field hosts state qualifying meet

After placing fourth overall at last year’s state track and field meet, the boys track and field team came prepared to maximize its individual and relay qualifications at Trojan Field May 15. The boys team qualified nine individuals and six relays, with exceptional performance from throwers, notably Colin Whitters ’26, who placed first in both the shot put and discus. The girls team automatically qualified four individuals and one relay.

 The boys team placed fifth overall, garnering 53 points. Field performances prevailed in placements, with Colin Whitters ’26 placing first in the show put, throwing 57′ 11.25″, and Mason Woods ’25 placing first in the long jump, jumping 23′ 4.5″.
