On May 1, the Iowa City West girls soccer team faced off against Western Dubuque in a double header. In addition to the double header, Thursday’s game was also the girls’ senior night. West High honored nine seniors, including varsity players Vera Tanas, Diana Tivanskaya, Paz Martinez, Sophia Oulman and Rachel Schafbuch. As emotions were high, West High entered the game with hopes to secure a win for the seniors.
The score remained 0-0 in the first twenty minutes as the Trojans were looking to find the back of the net. With control of the ball for the majority of the time, West was taking shots and barely missing their target every time. Finally, senior Sophia Oulman scored to begin the plethora of goals to follow. After a foul call, West had a free kick a little outside of the box. Alexandria Held ’26 took the shot, and the ball flew just out of the goalkeeper’s reach and into the goal. Unfortunately, an unlucky offside call claimed the goal invalid. Oulman responded with another goal, making it 2-0 at half.
In the second half the Trojans had no issues finding the back of the net with goals from Martinez and multiple others to total six goals for West in the second half of the match. West finished the game 8-0, securing the win on senior night.
After the match was over, West took the time to honor the seniors between all of the girl’s soccer teams by having each senior line up and one by one, were called out by name, given a small speech from the athletic director BJ Mayer and awarded a small flower by their family or friends to show their appreciation.
