An improvement from last season’s 6-3 win, the Trojans defeated City High 8-1 in a series of intense matchups. Starting with doubles, Aryan Harwani ’29 and Aaron Kang ’27 faced off City High in No. 1 doubles, winning 6-1 and 6-1. No. 2 doubles team of Prabhas Gupta ’28 and Matthew Dockery-Jackson ’28 also returned victorious, winning 6-1 and 6-0. Jensen Lin ’27 and Sudarshan Kasturirangan ’26 ended with a 6-0 and 6-2 win in No. 3 doubles.
After sweeping doubles, the team transitioned into singles. Although Harwani fell to his competitor 6-3, 6-1, Kang defeated his opponent 6-1 and 6-1 in No. 2 singles while Dockery-Jackson came through in No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win. Both Lin and Kasturirangan won, with scores of 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles and 6-4, 6-2 in No. 5 singles, respectively. Avi Jahangir ’27 triumphed in a heated matchup at No. 6 singles, winning 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8) after a tie breaking third set. Ultimately, West won 8-1, setting their season record to 9-1 and keeping their 6-0 win streak in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Contrary to previous years, the varsity tennis team in the 2025-26 school year is mostly composed of underclassmen. While there are two freshmen and four sophomores, only three juniors and one senior are on the team. When asked about the upperclassmen on his team, Harwani, a freshman, said “There’s barely any of them. But I love them.”
West closed their season with wins May 2 over Waterloo West, May 5 over Cedar Rapids Washington and May 7 against Linn-Mar, scoring 9-0, 7-2 and 7-2 respectively. The team remained highest-ranked in the MVC with a record of 12-1 before the postseason, which begins with districts meets for singles and doubles May 13 and May 16. Substate meets will begin May 20 for the team and May 27 for both singles and doubles.
