It’s finally baseball season for West High’s baseball team. Hoping to improve after a 19-20 record in the 2025 season, the Trojans started their season May 18 with a doubleheader at home against Waterloo West, who ended 2025 with a 5-34 record.

Game one of the doubleheader was back and forth early on. Shortstop Eli Nolte ’26 put West High on the board early, crushing a home run on the first pitch he faced. Both teams were tied at three runs each after the first two innings. Waterloo West raced out to a large lead with an explosive fourth inning, driving home nine runs to take a 14-3 lead. West High attempted to rally back, scoring four in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the Trojans fell 14-9. Nolte led the Trojans in hitting in game one with three hits, two home runs, three runs scored and four runs batted in. When reflecting on his strong performance in game one, Nolte noted his belief in pushing himself.

“I’m just out there flowing. Doing what I can for my team and getting results,” Nolte said.

Right fielder Christian Sawyer ’27 added two home runs in a strong performance for the Trojans.

West High flipped the script in game two, taking an early 5-0 lead after a four-run second inning. Despite a four-run rally in the fourth inning for Waterloo West, the Trojans managed to hang on to win their first game of the season 10-6. Pitcher Owen Harms ’26 had a strong showing in game two, hitting a double in each of his three at-bats. Second baseman Kyle Henkenius ’27 and first baseman Brady Thoma ’26 each added a home run, continuing West High’s strong slugging performance to start the year.

The Trojans are on the road for a doubleheader against Prairie May 20, before returning home for a game against Davenport West May 22.
