A look back on 2025-26: moments of excellence

Throughout the year, West High has made a strong show of excellence, ranging from the classroom to the court to the performance hall. Check out the moments that made us who we are this year.

West High students Chantel Abellana ’27, Riley Miller ’27, Josie Nabhan-Warren ’27 and Isun Shim ’27 dance the night away at prom May 2. This year, the party was held at The Highlander Hotel in Iowa City before the party after prom.

Violins of Symphony Strings play in time at the Musical Showcase April 29, a new concert for West’s top orchestra, band and choir. This year, the orchestra was accepted into the upcoming Midwest Clinic and National Orchestra Festival after an intense audition process.

Ryder Gorsh ’26 soars over the hurdles at the Drake Relays. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Gorsh, Waleed Ibrahim ’26, Ely Smock ’26 and Cade Towler ’27 set an all-time state record of 55.82 seconds April 25. The group also competed at state May 23, breaking the record again with a time of 55.39.

A masked singer performs at the pep rally Jan. 30. This year, student government organized a new second pep rally, with one for homecoming Sept. 26 and the next in the winter. The event featured student activities like bubble soccer and a hat-grabbing game.

Playing in sync, bassoonists from Wind Ensemble perform together Dec. 16. This year, the band was named Best 4A Band by the Iowa Bandmasters Association, one of the biggest titles for high school bands in Iowa. They performed at the IBA conference May 15.

Joey Cariens ’29 swims in the 200 yard freestyle at the IHSAA District Swim Meet Feb. 7. West High’s boys swim team took home champion titles from both districts and the state meet Feb. 14.

The cast of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” performs one of many death scenes. The production was named Outstanding Musical Production by the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards — its highest honor, as well as earning Outstanding Achievements for ensemble, student orchestra and leads Luke Reimer ’27 and Carter Birch Houchins-Witt ’26.

West High’s volleyball team prepares to open their game at Xtream Arena Nov. 3. With a new coach, the team qualified to the state bracket Oct. 28 and made it to quarterfinals.

Students perform an African dance at Walk It Out, featuring a Sudanese flag and swords. The event, held May 16, featured cultural outfit showcases and performances from five regions of the world — Europe, Africa, East Asia, the Middle East and South Asia.

Jumping over the bar, Evy Cornish ’27 competes in the high jump event at Iowa City High School April 26. Cornish cleared 4 feet 11 inches, putting her at sixth place overall. Girls track and field qualified 11 athletes to state May 14, where they competed at Drake Stadium May 21-23.

Sophie Bergman is a junior and this is her second year on staff. This year she’s the social media and video editor for the West Side Story and Trojan Epic Yearbook.

Colin is a junior returning for his second year on staff. This year, he’s the photo and sports editor for the print edition. Outside the newsroom, you can find him going on long runs, conducting the marching band or listening to music.
Taelim Yoon
Taelim Yoon, Yearbook Co-Editor-in-Chief and Co-Design Editor
Taelim Yoon is a senior at West High. This is her third year on Trojan Epic Yearbook and she is the Co-Editor-in-Chief and Co-Design Editor. This is also her first year on West Side Story print as a designer. Outside the newsroom, you can find her watching a movie or painting!
Emily Rabe
Emily Rabe, Yearbook Student Life Editor
Emily Rabe is a senior and this is her third year on the Trojan Epic and first year on staff for the West Side Story. This year she is the Student Life editor for Trojan Epic. In her free time she enjoys dancing at Nolte Academy, taking photos and getting DQ with friends.
Anna Greenlee
Anna Greenlee, Design, Entertainment and Opinion Editor
Anna Greenlee is a senior and this is her third year on staff. This is her second year as Design, Entertainment and Opinion Editor, and she specializes in graphic design. Outside of school, she enjoys cooking, painting and listening to Laufey.
