Members of Theatre West‘s spring musical, “A Gentleman’s Guide for Love and Murder,” will kill it during their opening performance tonight, not to mention the show’s eight other murders. However, like most other murder stories, there was a lot of behind-the-scenes work that often goes unseen.
Although it may be lesser known than Theatre West’s recent musicals, “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” is famous among its fans for casting one character as nine different characters. All nine D’Ysquith family members meet their ends in outlandish ways at the hand of Montague D’Ysquith Navarro, determined to become the Earl of Highhurst after he belatedly learns he is in the line of succession.
This week’s short run of four performances is actually a culmination of three months of work, from set builds to costume parades to sitzprobe. Over 150 students helped produce the show in some way in its cast, crew or pit orchestra.
“I love the people here and I love being a part of the shows because they’re so good,” Assistant Stage Manager Elsie Gross ’27 said. “Once you see a production that you helped make come to life, it’s the best feeling ever.”
The show opens tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Arganbright Auditorium and closes at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, with two other showings in between. Tickets are only available online; they will not be sold at the door.
