The Trojans hired new coach Lisa Birocci Banse with hopes of improving on last year’s 7-32 record. The season didn’t start the way they wanted with a loss to 13-1 to Solon on May 20. Things did not look good for the Trojans who would then drop the next six games to bring their record to 0-7. On June 4, they turned that around with a sweep intheir home opener against Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Jefferson came in with a record of 1-8.
In game one of the doubleheader the Trojans fought their way out of a bases loaded jam with one out. The Trojans would then get the offense going with a single by Olivia Freidhof ’28 and Aarianna Shaw ’27. Two outs quick outs came after that, but Avery Wynes ’29 hit a two out, two RBI double to score both Freidhof and Shaw.
The Trojans then proceeded to get two more runs in the inning with a triple by Savannah Mathais ’28.
In the top of the second Ava Gladden ’28 struck out three batters to get the Trojans back on offense the Trojans did not put up any runs and brought a 4-0 lead into the third. Gladden would pickup another strikeout in the third putting the Trojans back on offense where they had a huge inning with a three RBI triple by Delores Hubbard ’27.
The Trojans led 11-0 going into the fourth where Gladden picked up another strikeout and shutdown Jefferson to win the game one 11-0. Gladden finished the game with five strikeouts and was the only pitcher to pitch for the Trojans.
In game two, the Trojans switched to Emma Gallagher ’29 on the mound. Jefferson picked up one run in the top of the first, and the Trojans responded with two runs of their own, leading 2-1 after the first.
Gallagher went back out for the second, striking out one. The Trojans’ offense exploded again, putting up five runs with a two RBI single by Keeley Hall ’27, putting the Trojans up 7-1. After a quick 1-2-3 at the top of the third, the Trojans were back on offense and put up seven runs with a two RBI single by Avery Wynes. Jefferson tried to fight back, putting up one run in the top of the fourth, but Gallagher shut them down after that, and the Trojans won with a score of 14-2.
The Trojans finished the night with a sweep of Jefferson by winning the games 11-0 and 14-2. The Trojans improved their record to 2-7 on the year. They will take on Fairfield and Davenport West on June 5.
