West High hosted the individual regional tournament May 16. Coming off a 12-1 regular season, the boys team competed in individual regionals, the first tournament of its postseason. For the tournament, each school submitted up to two entries for singles and doubles, with the top two finishers in each category qualifying for the boys individual state tournament. The state tournament will take place May 27-28. Last year, the boys tennis team qualified four entries, including Derek Hua ’25 and Anthony Medina ’25, who placed first in doubles, and Junze Sun ’25 and Ishan Harwani ’25, who placed second. In singles, Pierce Hribar ’28 and Aaron Kang ’27 placed second and third, respectively.
This year, West entered four competitors — two in singles and two doubles teams — with five players ultimately qualifying for state. Prabhas Gupta ’28 and Matthew Dockery-Jackson ’28 competed in singles, while Ary Harwani ’29 and Pierce Hribar ’28 advanced to state in doubles, alongside Aaron Kang ’27 and Jensen Lin ’27. The boys competed against entries from Ankeny, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Des Moines East, Southeast Polk and Waterloo West.
In doubles, Kang and Lin defeated Southeast Polk and Cedar Rapids Kennedy 6-0, 6-1 and 7-5, 7-6 (14-12), respectively, qualifying for state. In their third match, they faced teammates Hribar and Harwani, finishing second overall. Hribar and Harwani placed first in doubles after winning their first two matches 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, then defeating Kang and Lin 6-0, 6-1 to determine state seeding In singles, Dockery-Jackson won his first match 6-0, 6-1 but lost in the second round 1-6, 1-6. Placing second in singles, Gupta defeated his opponents in all three matches: 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0.
