Iowa City West High School’s varsity show choir, Good Time Company, brought a creative twist to its 51st season with a show inspired by the video game Minecraft. Known in the eastern Iowa show choir scene for its bold concepts and high-energy performances, this year’s production featured memorable moments like the “lava chicken” dance and dancers carrying “brick” boxes across the stage to match the blocky Minecraft theme. The season began at summer choreo camp, where members learned the choreography for the entire show before continuing rehearsals twice a week once school started.
Throughout the winter, GTC traveled to five competitions, including trips to Davenport Central, Sauk Prairie, Norwalk, Cedar Rapids Washington and Pella High Schools. The show also featured two young performers, fourth-grade students who played the “chickens,” adding a playful element to the performance. The group wrapped up its competition season with a clean sweep at Pella’s Dutch Masters competition before closing the year with its annual Swing Show, celebrating a season of crafting.
