The Trojans started their season off right with a 56-50 win on home court against Waukee High School. After a loss to Clear Creek Amana in their second game of the year, the team rebounded with key wins over No. 11 Iowa City High, No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington and No. 10 Iowa City Liberty. Now halfway through the season, the Trojans sit ranked eighth in the state with a record of 14–6.

The team is led by Drake University commit Grace Fincham ’26, who leads the team in points, rebounds and assists. Abby Neumiller ’26 has also been a big part of the team’s success, as she leads the team in three-pointers made with 52. She is second on the team in points with 196 points scored so far.

The Trojans and new Head Coach Jason Kern started the season with a loss at home against CCA. The Trojans were able to manage two wins in their next four games to improve their record to 2-3. The Trojans were able to battle back and win three straight games against Dubuque Wahlert, Iowa City High and Iowa City Liberty.

In his senior campaign, Ethan Headings leads the team in total points with 245. Corey Davis ‘27 is an emerging star as he has 85 points in 18 games, starting eight of them and coming off the bench for eight of them for the Trojans. Jack Jensen-Fitzpatrick ’26 has been a key piece for West as he leads the team in three-point attempts and three-pointers made. Jensen-Fitzpatrick, when asked about how the season was going, said, “Overall I think we’re having a pretty good year, even with the rough beginning to the year, we have rebounded and started playing better.” 

The team is currently unranked with a record of 10-8, though they look to build on that record with more wins down the final stretch of the year.

The Trojan girls wrestling team has started the season strong, coming in with a record of 4-2. The team has posted victories over Dubuque Senior, Xavier, CCA and cross-town rival City High Schools. Their only losses have been to the second-ranked Liberty Lightning and undefeated Linn-Mar. Most recently, the Trojans defeated Xavier at home, 42-39. A big victory for the team was the 42-39 win against the Little Hawks at Xtream Arena, winning seven of the 13 bouts, including three by fall. At the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament, six wrestlers placed, with newcomer Brianna Lucero ’27 taking 13th at 115 pounds. Lucero also leads the team in takedowns and pins this season. The team took two wrestlers to the state tournament, with Lucero placing eight and Eva Jara ’28 taking second place at their respective weight classes.

The boys wrestling team has gotten off to an impressive start this season, boasting a record of 8-1. They have recorded dominating wins over Dubuque Senior, Xavier and Linn-Mar High Schools. Competing at the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament, four athletes placed.

The team’s performance was highlighted by Alexander Pierce ’26 earning a first-place medal at 120 pounds, with Kaden Stitt ’26, Ashten Holmes ’28 and Hugo Hughes ’29 placing seventh, 13th and 12th, respectively. Hosting the Iowa City Duals on Dec. 13, the Trojans posted victories over Iowa City Liberty, Pleasant Valley and Valley High Schools. The team then traveled to Fort Dodge to participate in the Don Miller Invitational, where they took second place out of 12 teams.

The team looks to carry this momentum to the state tournament Feb. 18-21.  They qualified nine wrestlers: Diego Robertty ’29, Hughes, Pierce, Owin Koethe ’29, Blest Woods ’29 and Campbell Janis ’26, Charles Barnhouse ’27,  Stitt and Holmes. They also won the team title at their district meet.

The girls bowling team started off strong with a 2061-1719 win over Wahlert Catholic at home, but then lost two tough matches on the road to Cedar Falls and Waterloo West. Despite the losses, Keliah Ramirez ’27 put up a season-high game of 199 pins. Bouncing back, they defeated Cedar Rapids Washington and Marion in a home meet, with senior and Co-Captain Sage Pottorff recording a season-high series of 331 total pins. The largest victory yet came in a 2351-2184 triumph to secure the Queen Pin over City High, as the Trojans haven’t beaten the Little Hawks in the past seven years. “It felt really good to compete well against a team that is so close to us, as we are rivals that share the same bowling alley,” Pottorff said. They end their season with a record of 5-6. 

With the team being comprised of athletes from West, Liberty, CCA and Regina, only two bowlers on the varsity team are from West. After losing several senior leaders last year, the team has had a rebuilding season with a record of 1-9, with a win over Wahlert Catholic. However, Thomas Butler ’26 has been impressive, leading the team in total pins. In a close loss to Dubuque Senior, Butler scored a season-high of 288 pins. This is also a team high for the season. An emerging star is Hector Reyna ’27, who has started all games for the Trojans and has recorded a high series of 352 total pins. They aim to qualify for state Feb. 16 at home.  

Almost done with their season, the Trojan Bolts boys swim team is 43-1, and a top team in the state. Winston Fan ’26 leads the team in the fastest time in the 200-yard individual, 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke. The Trojan bolts finished first out of seven teams in the Cougar Invite and in the Little Hawk Invite. They also came in first out of seven teams.

The Trojan bolts took home a state title Feb. 14, beating Linn-Mar by four points. While they did not have any individual state champions, the team still did very well individually. Fan placed second in the 100-years butterfly and third in the 100-years breaststroke. Ethan Landon ’27 placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly.
