Trojan wrestlers mark wins over Xavier, Kennedy and honor seniors
Minna Abdalla ‘26, a more recent addition to the team, started out strong and went for a takedown right away, and scored in 48 seconds. She was able to turn her opponent to score four nearfall points and enter the second period up 7-0. Abdalla started in the top position, but her opponent scored a reversal, quickly followed by Abdalla’s reversal of her own, putting the score at 9-2. Her opponent was able to turn her and scored four nearfall points, followed by a pin with three minutes and 46 seconds left.
Lila Bihun ‘27 accepted the forfeit at 105 pounds. At 110 pounds, Angela Wang ‘29 took on Xavier’s Joey Hines ‘26. Wang scored a takedown with one minute and 14 seconds left in the first period and entered the second period up 3-0. Wang started in the bottom position and escaped with a minute and 53 seconds left. She took down her opponent and pinned them with 16 seconds left in the second period.
Brianna Lucero ‘27 and Kaylee Hampton ‘28 accepted forfeits at 115 and 120 pounds, respectively.
At 125 pounds, Josie Clark ‘28 wrestled an eventful match against Xavier’s Lili Moses ‘28. Clark scored a quick takedown right away, followed by a reversal from Moses. Clark scored an escape followed by a takedown, putting her up 7-2 at the end of the first period. In the second period, Clark scored a takedown and three nearfall points. Moses scored a reversal with eight seconds left in the second period and chose the top position going into the third period. Despite her strong lead, Clark lost the match by fall with one minute and two seconds left in the match.
At 130 pounds, Michaela Vogel ‘28 lost by fall with 29 seconds left in the first period.
At 135 pounds, Noah Overholt ‘28 scored a takedown within the first 30 seconds of the match, and her opponent scored an escape 13 seconds later. Overholt scored a takedown with 35 seconds left in the first period, putting her up 6-1. Overholt chose neutral position going into the second period, scored a takedown in 17 seconds and pinned her opponent, securing six team points for West.
Sylvia Broffitt ‘26 took on Xavier’s Aly Flack ‘28 at 140. In the first period, Flack scored a three-point takedown and a four-point nearfall, putting her up 7-0. Broffitt rallied in the second period, starting in the bottom position, scoring a reversal and later a takedown, putting the score at 8-5 Flack. But Broffitt was unable to pull ahead and lost the match 11-5.
Ayla Bleil ‘28 wrestled a high-scoring match, despite losing by fall in just over three minutes. Her opponent, freshman Ava Cless, scored a takedown in 22 seconds. Bleil scored a reversal six seconds later, but Cless escaped. Bleil scored one more takedown in the first period, but Cless scored a takedown, four nearfall points, an escape point and two bonus points. The score was 14-5 going into the second period. Bleil battled back at the beginning of the second, scoring a takedown and for nearfall points, but Cless followed with a reversal and ultimately pinned her.
155 pounds is open for West High, and Xavier accepted the forfeit.
Emmerson Reimers ‘28 accepted the forfeit for West at 170 pounds.
Aya Adam ‘28 wrestled an exciting match. Stepping in for Eva Jara ‘28, she was not expected to win her match. She ultimately lost by fall in the second period, but put up quite the fight, scoring two takedowns and nearfall points before she was pinned.
Amira Vazquez ‘29 accepted the forfeit at 235 pounds, giving West the points they needed to secure a 42-39 win.
Starting at 106 pounds, Nicholas Rubio ‘29 took on a tough match against Xavier’s Anakin Deppe ’29. Rubio scored first with an early takedown, but Deppe was able to scramble and reverse Rubio, earning four nearfall points as well. From that point, Rubio was unable to get any momentum, and Deppe scored a technical fall in four minutes and nine seconds.
At 113 pounds, Diego Robertty ’29 immediately took down his opponent in the first few seconds, getting out to an early 3-0 lead. With a tight hold and a turn, Robertty was able to earn a pin in just 35 seconds.
At 120 pounds, freshman Hugo Hughes quickly got to his offense, taking down Miguel Astorga ’27 and turning Astorga onto his back, resulting in six nearfall points at the end of the first period. Giving up just two points to a reversal, Hughes scored two more takedowns and nearfall points en route to a second-period technical fall.
At 126 pounds, Alexander Pierce ’26 scored a takedown in the first seven seconds of the match, immediately turning junior Elliott Gnewuch onto his back. Pierce received a four-point nearfall before Gnewuch was able to escape and relocate to the center of the mat. It didn’t take long for Pierce to get another takedown, pinning Gnewuch in one minute and 14 seconds.
Owen Smock ’28 wrestled a hard-fought match against Taitumn Deppe ’27 at 132 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Deppe chose the bottom position and earned a reversal after much fighting over control. Smock took several shots in the third period and forced a stalling call against Deppe, but Deppe earned another takedown to seal the decision, 5-0.
At 138 pounds, Charles Barnhouse got off to a hot start, scoring four takedowns in the first period to take a 12-3 lead. He continued this into the second, notching another takedown in the first 10 seconds. He purposefully released his opponent back into neutral position to score three more takedowns, earning a technical fall in two minutes and 46 seconds.
At 144 pounds, Medhi Bangana ’28 and Xavier’s Ryan Kelly ’26 went back and forth in a high-scoring affair. Banagana took down Kelly three times in the first two minutes, leading 9-3 at the end of the first period. Kelly opted for the bottom position and got out for the escape, where he was able to take Bangana down and turn him for two nearfall points. It was tied 9-9 going into the third period. However, Kelly found his footing and scored two more takedowns and another nearfall, resulting in a 17-10 decision, giving Xavier three team points.
Freshman Owin Koethe faced senior Bryce Naber at 150 pounds. Koethe scored a takedown and two nearfall points in the first. Naber chose the bottom position going into the second, and Koethe scored two more nearfall points. Starting down going into the third, Koethe scored a reversal, followed by an escape and takedown from Naber. The match finished with a 9-4 win for Koethe.
At 157 pounds, Blest Woods ‘29 took on Xavier’s Calvin Hacke. Woods scored a takedown and four-point nearfall in the first. He deferred going into the second, and Calvin Hacke chose neutral. From there, Woods scored two takedowns in the second. The two went neutral going into the third, and Woods got a takedown, securing a tech fall in four minutes and 27 seconds
Campbell Janis ‘26 wrestled a dominating match at 165 pounds. He got a takedown in the first 30 seconds, worked to get 11 nearfall points total by the end of the first period. The match was 14-0 going into the second, with Janis choosing the bottom position. His escape got him the 15-point lead he needed to secure a technical fall in two minutes and three seconds.
Lincoln Bopp ‘27 wrestled Xavier’s Keegan Kalainoff at 175 pounds. Kalainoff started off strong in the first, earning a takedown and three nearfall points. He scored a takedown and an escape in the second to have a 10-point lead going into the third. Bopp rallied, scoring two takedowns in the third, but it wasn’t enough. The match finished with a win for Xavier with a 12-6 decision.
Xavier’s Dusty Cook dominated his match against Jack Law ‘26 at 190 pounds. Cook scored two takedowns and seven nearfall points in the first, and Law’s escape point was the only one he had on the board going into the second. Cook’s takedown in the second gave him the points he needed to secure a tech fall in two minutes and 20 seconds.
At 215 pounds, Ashten Holmes ‘26 wrestled a quick match. He scored a takedown in 40 seconds, and another one later in the first after his opponent escaped. He won by fall in one minute and 26 seconds.
Heavyweight Kaden Stitt ‘26 wrestled a dominating match against Xavier’s Kei Evans. Within the first period alone, Stitt scored four takedowns and four nearfall points, giving him a 16-3 lead going into the second. Evans chose down, and Stitt turned him for a fall in two minutes and 32 seconds.
The Trojans prevailed 47-19.
At 100 pounds, Minna Abdalla ‘26 won by forfeit at the start of the dual.
At 105 pounds, Lila Bihun ‘27 got a takedown in the first ten seconds and won by fall in 25.
At 110 pounds, Angela Wang ‘29 wrestled a rough match against Kennedy’s Mariana Angeles. Angeles scored three takedowns in the first, and Wang was able to escape from two, putting the match at 9-2 hoping into the second. Angeles chose the top position and Wang escaped, but Angeles scored another takedown that Wang escaped from. Wang chose the top position going into the third, but Angeles escaped and took her down again and pinned her with six seconds left in the match.
At 115 pounds, New Mexico state champion Brianna Lucero ‘27 dominated her match. She scored five takedowns in the first period, and won by fall with one second left in the first period.
At 120 pounds, Josie Clark ‘28 got taken down in the first. Clark followed with a reversal, but her opponent followed with a reversal of her own then scored a total of 10 nearfall points by the end of the first. Her opponent chose neutral going into the second, took Clark down, and pinned her in two minutes and 24 seconds.
At 125 pounds, Kaylee Hampton ‘28 got taken down by her opponent Paisley Levundusky in the first period but followed with a reversal. In the second, Hampton scored a takedown and two point nearfall right at the end of the period. She started down in the third, escaped then scored a takedown and secured a pin with 40 seconds left.
At 130 pounds, Noah Overholt ‘28 scored a takedown and two-point nearfall in the first. She started down going into the second and scored a reversal. From that position, she pinned her opponent in two minutes and 45 seconds.
At 135 pounds, Michaela Vogel ‘28 got taken down twice in the first period. Vogel rallied back in the second, starting from the top position. She won by fall in three minutes and 27 seconds.
West forfeited 140 pounds, giving six team points to Kennedy.
At 145 pounds, Sylvia Broffitt ‘26 got a takedown towards the end of the first and won by fall in one minute and 23 seconds.
West forfeited 155 pounds due to not having anyone in that weight class.
At 170 pounds, Emmerson Reimers ‘28 got taken down at the end of the first and was able to escape with six seconds left. She started up going into the second; her opponent escaped, then took her down. Reimers escaped with around a minute left in the second. Her opponent scored a takedown at the beginning of the third, and pinned Reimers in five minutes and four seconds.
Due to an injury, Eva Jara ‘28 did not wrestle at 190 pounds and forfeited her match.
Aya Adams ‘28 won 285 by forfeit. West prevailed 48-35.
At 106 pounds, Nicholas Rubio ‘29 won by fall in 35 seconds.
At 113 pounds, Diego Robertty ‘29 scored a takedown in 15 seconds, then scored four nearfall points. His opponent from Kennedy, Alex Martin, escaped. Robertty then scored a takedown and won by fall in one minute and 13 seconds.
At 120 pounds, Xavier’s Max Panosh got the first points on the board with a three point takedown in the first. West’s Hugo Hughes ‘29 followed with an escape then a takedown and a four-point nearfall and got a pin at the end of the first period.
At 126 pounds, Alexander Pierce ‘26 scored a takedown then a fall in 34 seconds.
At 132 pounds, Owen Smock ‘28 won with an 11-5 decision. No points were scored in the first period. Smock deferred and Kurkert chose down going into the second and escaped in six seconds. Smock got two takedowns and Burkett escaped in the second period. Smock chose the bottom position going into the third, and got a reversal. Kurkert escaped, then Smock gollowed with a takedown. Burkert’s reversal at the end of the match was not enough to score him the points he needed to win.
At 138 pounds, Charles Barnhouse ‘27 wrestled an eventful first period. He scored a takedown, then his opponent, Finn Hallam, followed with a reversal. Barnhouse escaped, and scored a takedown. Hallam deferred going into the second and Barnhouse chose the top position. Barnhouse then turned him for four nearfall points. Barnhouse chose neutral going into the third. He scored a takedown and three nearfall points for 17-2 tech fall.
The 144 pound match marked Kennedi’s first win of the night. Medhi Bangana ‘28 took on Xavier’s Aiden Roman. Roman got a takedown in the first, and the match went 3-0 going into the second. Bangana deferred and Roman chose neutral. Roman scored a takedown and turned Bangana for a fall in three minutes and 23 seconds.
Freshman Owin Koethe wrestled a dominating match against Xavier’s Sam Myers. Koethe scored a takedown and four nearfal points in the first. Myers deferred going into the second, and Koethe chose down. In the second, Myers got warned for stalling, Koethe escaped with 49 seconds left, and got a takedown with 31 seconds left and scored four point nearfall at the end of the second. He won with a 15-0 technical fall.
At 157 pounds, Blest Woods ‘29 wrestled a quick match. He scored a takedown seven seconds in and followed with a three point nearfall. He pinned his opponent in one minute and 18 seconds.
At 165 pounds, Campbell Janis ‘26 got a takedown in the first, putting the match at 3-0 going into the second. His opponent Walker Black deferred, and Janis chose the bottom position. Janis scored a reversal in second, and the match went 5-0 in Janis’s favor going into the third. Black chose neutral, and scored a takedown at the start of the third. Janis followed with a reversal and ultimately won 7-3.
175 pounds marked Xavier’s second win of the night. Their wrestler Jack Hayes took down Lincoln Bopp ‘27 and pinned him in one minute and 18 seconds.
At 190 pounds, Jack Law ‘26 lost in a 15-12 decision. The match went back and forth between the two, with both of them getting called for stalling. The third period was eventful with multiple stall calls, takedowns, escapes and penalty points called.
At 215 pounds, Ashten Holmes ‘28 scored a takedown in 17 seconds then got a three point nearfall. His opponent escaped, and Holmes took him down again. Clark escaped again, but Holmes took him down and pinned him in one minute and 11 seconds.
At 285 pounds, Kaden Stitt ‘26 scored a takedown in the first period, putting the match at 3-0 going into the second. He took the top position going into the second, and his opponent escaped. He went down into the third and escaped. He secured a 4-1 decision win.
The boys won 55-15.
Before wrestling Cedar Rapids Kennedy, senior wrestlers were recognized for their contributions to the program.
Two girls were recognized: Minna Abdalla and Sylvia Broffitt. Abdalla joined the team partway through this season, filling in the varsity spot at 100 pounds. As a first-year wrestler, she currently holds a 5-7 record.
Broffitt is the only senior who has been with the team since it was officially sanctioned in 2022, her freshman year. She has been a leader on the team and currently serves as the captain.
Five senior boys were recognized. Campbell Janis, Jack Law, Alexander Pierce, Kaden Stitt and Tage Zimmermann.
Janis wrestles in the 165-pound weight class. He currently holds a 34-12 record, including 18 pins and 13 technical falls.
Law wrestles in the 190-pound weight class. He currently holds a 56-74 high school record and a 21-15 2025-26 record.
Pierce announced his commitment to Northwestern University late last year. He currently holds a 42-9 record, including 25 pins, ten tech falls, and three major decisions. He is a three-time state finalist and one-time state champion.
Stitt currently holds a 119-56 record. The Oklahoma native is also an accomplished wrestler in the Greco-Roman style and has attended multiple national tournaments.
Zimmermann has been wrestling for one year and holds an 11-7 record on West’s JV team.
