West’s baseball team looked to rebound against Davenport West May 22 after a doubleheader against Prairie May 20 left the Trojans with a 1-3 record to begin the season.
The Trojans only needed three runs to secure the victory, driving in two runs in the second before adding another run in the fourth. Right fielder Christian Sawyer ’27 hit his team-leading third home run of the season, while left fielder Tyler Shane ’26 drove in his first run of the season with a double as the Trojans shut out Davenport West 3-0 to pick up their second win of the season. Shane noted his emotions when getting his first run batted in of the season.
“In the moment, it felt good to get some insurance for Kyle. He threw a great game on the mound and I was just trying to do my job and help him out,” Shane said.
Stellar pitching was on display during this low-scoring affair. Pitcher Kyle Henkenius ’27 allowed only three hits as he pitched a complete game. Henkenius’ nine strikeouts helped him pick up his first win of the season and the Trojans’ first shutout of the year.
After wrapping up their first week of the season with a 2-3 record, the Trojans return on the road against Bettendorf May 26 and Muscatine May 27, before beginning conference play with a doubleheader at Liberty May 29.
