The Little Hawk Arena erupted in cheer on Thursday night when the Trojans scored the game-winning point in the annual battle for the Spike.
The game started at 7:00 p.m., and the Trojans quickly led 3-0. However, the Little Hawks soon overtook the Trojans, leading to West using its first timeout at 7-4. They used their second timeout at 18-12, but ultimately lost the first set 25-15.
West started the second set behind, yet caught up to tie at 5-5. The rest of the set was back-and-forth, but eventually, West led 20-16. City called their second timeout and pushed to tie at 24-24, then scored two more to win the set 26-24.
The third set began similarly, but West eventually called their first timeout at 16-14 when City started to catch up. The teams were still neck-and-neck until West’s second timeout at 18-17, after which the Trojans pushed to win the set 25-19.
“I never doubt my girls. I fill them with tons of confidence and let them know that I always believe in them, our coaching staff always believes in them, and that only helps them more because they gain confidence,” coach Jaedynn Evans said.
With the momentum from winning the third set, the Trojans fought with the Little Hawks to 16-17, then tied at 20-20 and 21-21. West drove to 25-23, winning the fourth set and putting the teams in a tie.
In the fifth and final set, the teams matched almost point-for-point, ultimately tying at 9-9. West won the next six points to finish the set 15-9, ultimately winning the game 3-2.
“I felt like we were not in our game. We woke up towards the end and locked in,” setter Lila Eastvold ’27 said.
West’s last home game of the regular season will be on Oct. 7 against the Liberty High Lightning. The game will start at 7:00 p.m. in the West High Main Gym.
