After a seven-game win streak, the West girls tennis team was prepared to face off against one of their toughest competitors yet, the Cedar Falls Tigers, on Aug. 28.
The singles matches were split 3-3. Grace Wang ’27 and Zariah Jahangir ’29 both won their matches 2-0, and Sophia Singh ’27 won in a 10-point tiebreak 10-7. Iris Vasi ’28, Elsie Gross ’27 and Audrey Crawford ’26 all lost their matches 2-0.
After a back-and-fourth round of singles matches, the girls knew they had to come in clutch for the doubles matches.
Singh and Wang ultimately lost their match 2-0, while Crawford and Jahangir won their match 2-0. The meet came down to Gross and Vasi, who went into a 10-point tiebreaker. The pair came back strong, winning the tiebreaker 10-3, which ultimately won the meet for West.
“We knew that it was gonna come down to our match. We watched one doubles lose and three doubles win, so we knew we really had to lock in,” Gross said. “It was genuinely such a great feeling. It was good for an individual feeling, but knowing that we won the meet for the team was just really great.”

Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Coming off a tight 5-4 win against Cedar Falls a week prior, the West girls tennis team made quick work defeating Cedar Rapids Kennedy Sept. 3. The teams competed for around two hours, resulting in an 8-1 victory for West.
Starting strong, Audrey Crawford ’26 won her match 6-1, 6-0, followed shortly after by Iris Vasi ’28 and Elsie Gross ’27, both winning their matches 6-0, 6-0. Soon after, Zariah Jahangir ’29 and Gracie Liu ’27 won their matches at 4 and 5 Singles, sweeping the meet for West. Emma Lai ’28 endured a series of long points at 6 Singles, where she pulled through and defeated her opponent 7-5, 7-5.
Having not dropped a game in singles, Gross and Vasi carried their winning streak into doubles, defeating their opponents 8-0. Crawford and Jahangir followed shortly after with an 8-1 win. After a tough battle at 3 Doubles, Lai and Liu ultimately fell short to their opponents 3-8.
