In the third episode of “Spilling secrets with Sophie,” Sophie interviews West Side Story’s online Editor-in-Chief for the 2024-25 school year, Ashlyn Brady ’25, and the Editor-in-Chief for the 2025-26 school year, Evelyn Kraber ’26. They talk about their journey to editor-in-chief, and activities they do outside of journalism.
Brady and Kraber both expressed similar feelings of achievement and increased responsibility after becoming editor-in-chief.
“All the effort I’ve put in since freshman year feels like it’s paying off,” Kraber said. “It was kind of nice to get that recognition of, ‘this is someone who cares.'”
As for future plans, Ashlyn has already committed to the University of Iowa next year as a direct admit to the Tippie College of Business. “For right now, I’m not planning on joining the publication, and I’m not majoring in journalism, but we’ll figure it out as I go.”
Kraber sees journalism as a big part of their future, “With the state of journalism and the government, I don’t know if being a journalist is necessarily what I want to do or not, but it’s something I’m considering. I definitely want to keep writing in college.”
Outside of journalism, Brady likes to read and explore other hobbies when she has time. Kraber leads the lights crew of Theater West. They’ve been on the crew since freshman year, and running light cues since eighth grade.
