The West Side Story garnered two sweepstakes awards from the Iowa High School Press Association on Oct. 25, first place Graphics (large schools) and second place Writing (large schools) for ’12-’13 school year issues.
WSS staffers also landed awards in IHSPA On-the-Spot contests. Amelia Moser ’14 won first place in the news writing category, Fiona Armstrong-Pavlik ’14 and Lauren Knudson ’15 placed second place in opinion and news writing, respectively. Brittani Langland ’15 grabbed an honorable mention for sports writing.
“The WSS staffers never fail to impress me with their enthusiasm for and dedication to everything journalism. These awards are a great testament to their drive and inventiveness,” said Sara Whittaker, adviser of the WSS.
The annual IHSPA conference drew Iowa journalism students, advisers and experts to the Iowa Memorial Union downtown. Students participated in sessions dedicated to anything from covering controversial topics to transitioning to college journalism.
Individual WSS staffers are also finalists in the National Scholastic Press Association’s feature and multimedia story of the year contest, of which winners will be announced at the National Scholastic Press Association conference in Boston on Nov. 16.
