West student wins second place at national math contest

Junhee Lee awarded $6,000 at Atlanta math competition.

West High junior Junhee Lee won $6,000 at the recent math competition Who Wants to Be a Mathematician. The event was part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings held in Atlanta January 4-7. Over 6,000 mathematicians attended the meeting.

Lee finished in second place among ten semifinalists, who were selected from more than 2,300 students nationwide based on their scores on a qualifying test administered by the game’s technology sponsor, Maplesoft, using its online testing and assessment tool, Maple T.A.

Of the $6,000 total winnings, $3,000 will go to Lee and the remaining $3,000 to the West High math department.
