Ice cream, board games and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” made for a lively start to the year for Best Buddies last Wednesday, Sept. 20 in the freshman commons.  A welcoming environment for all, the international organization aims to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as build friendships that can last throughout high school and beyond.

The head of Best Buddies for West High, Sadie Widmer ‘18, encourages students to get involved in the program.

“We have parties once a month which vary a lot, sometimes karaoke nights, cake decorating, games, movies, there are lots of different things,” Widmer said. “You get to make wonderful new friends and get to see so many different perspectives of people that you don’t get to see on a regular school day.”

Their next event is right around the corner on Oct. 6, where they will walk in the University of Iowa homecoming parade. After that, Oct. 13 holds the Best Buddies Night at the varsity football game, and on Oct. 23 a fall fun fair at City Park is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
