Staff Spotify playlist: January 2018
Ring in the new year with some new favorites of the West Side Story staff.
January 29, 2018
This playlist is a mix of West Side Story’s favorite pop, ballad, electronic and Latino songs this month. Some of the songs are new hits, while others are missed gems on popular albums.
Our highlights:
“instagram”: K-pop is taking the western world by storm with groups like BTS making it all the way to the AMA’s. Dean has a lot of R&B vibes with some hip-hop in his songs, but “instagram” is one of his more chill songs, perfect for studying. Other songs from Dean are: “I’m Not Sorry” (feat. Eric Bellinger), “Shut Up and Groove” as well as “And July.”
“Rewrite the Stars”: Even if you haven’t seen The Greatest Showman yet, you will still enjoy “Rewrite the Stars”, sung by Zac Efron and Zendaya. The two characters cannot be together because the movie is set in the 1800s when interracial relationships were looked down upon. However, Zac Efron’s character insists upon them “rewriting the stars” and being together anyway.
“Cave Me In”: This song is R&B with a sprinkle of hip-hop, performed by the artists Gallant, Tablo and Eric Nam. Gallant’s biggest hit yet is “Weight in Gold” from his album Ology. Tablo is a South Korean-Canadian who raps, writes songs and produces records. Eric Nam is a Korean American who was named “2016 Man Of the Year” by GQ Korea and has had a lot of hits. Together, they create a hit.
“Perfect”: This new hit has taken over the charts recently. However, what most people don’t realize is that the song was written about Ed Sheeran’s fiance. They met in high school and reconnected when the time was right. ‘Perfect’ is a pop song that was released in his ‘Divide’ album.
Aftertaste: This song is perfect for a summer drive, doing homework or hanging out with your friends. “Aftertaste” has grown increasingly popular after it was released on Dec. 15, 2017 as a single.. Some of Whethan’s other popular songs include “Good Nights”, “Sleepy Eyes” and “Can’t Hide”.
“Almost Like Praying”: This song, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also wrote songs for Hamilton) includes the singers Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and many others. This song was made to support hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and all of the sales from the single are being donated to the Hispanic Federation.
