NSPA names a record-breaking number of WSS staffers as finalists in national contest
12 students are finalists in the Portfolio, Story, Digital Story, Design, Cartoon and Social Justice Reporting of the Year contests
National Scholastic Press Association announced finalists for its 2019 individual contests, with contest categories including up to 10 finalists nationwide. The West Side Story students recognized include:
- Writer of the Year finalist: Anjali Huynh ‘19
- Marketer of the Year finalist: Thomas Duong ‘19
- Sports Story finalist: Sophie Stephens ‘19 for “Silent tradition”
- Sports Story finalist: Will Conrad ‘19 and Deniz Ince ’19 for “Why not women, too?”
- Multimedia Feature Story Package finalists: Kristina Rosebrook ‘19 and Stephens for “Novel conversations: Author Nic Stone”
- Multimedia Sports Story Package finalists: Conrad and Ince for “Why not women, too?”
- Illustration finalist: Crystal Kim ‘19 for “Senior confessions”
- Newsmagazine Page/Spread finalist: Amy Liao ‘21 for “Behind the numbers”
- Photo Slideshow finalist: Kara Wagenknecht ‘19 for “Boys basketball moves on to state tournament”
- Interactive Graphic finalist: Joe Goodman ‘20 for “Boxed out: the exploitation of college athletes”
- Cartoon of the Year finalist: Brenda Gao ‘21 for “Risky texts”
- Social Justice Reporting finalists: Huynh and Jessica Moonjely ‘20 for “In the minority”
The 2018-2019 WSS newspaper staff is also a Pacemaker finalist. All finalists will be recognized and the winners announced at the National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C. on Nov. 23.
