For some, winter is the most beloved time of year. They look forward to snow, movies, gifts and everything else the season has to offer. But for others, all that is something to dread. No matter your take on the holiday season, here are 13 songs guaranteed to get you in the festive mood.

Now, for a few highlights:

“The Christians and the Pagans” by Dar Williams is a great song that, similar to “That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!” By Sufjan Stevens, expresses the clashing that can often occur in families during the holidays. But in this song, the family, split by religion, is able to come together despite their differences for a Christmas Eve dinner.

Speaking of Sufjan Stevens, my personal favorite holiday song, “That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!” by Sufjan Stevens, is a definite classic. This song has been with me since I was a child, and it never disappoints. It’s the perfect amount of slow and calming but the chaotic lyrics balance things out and make it all the more relatable.

“The Blizzard”, sung by Camera Obscura, is a great song for getting into the spirit of the holidays. The wind in the background of the song makes it feel just like there’s an actual blizzard barricading you inside, which at least for me, feels pretty on-par with an Iowa winter.

“What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” Composed by The Head and the Heart, this is a modern take on the 1947 classic by Frank Loesser. It’s off of the album “Holidays Rule”, which is a collaborative series of classic holiday songs done by various artists, well known and underground. This album also contains the folk-version of “Auld Lang Syne” by Andrew Bird that is also featured in this playlist.
