No Cap Recap: fall sports shutdown

It has been a crazy couple of months for athletes at West High.

On this episode of the No Cap Recap, hosts Owen Aanestad ’22 and Camille Gretter ’23 take a look back at the summer sports season and the send-off of the Class of 2020 while also recapping the first two weeks of the 2020-2021 fall sports season before being shut down due to all online learning starting Sept. 8.

Highlights

The football team took care of business in the first two weeks of the season defeating both cross-town rivals Liberty (27-0) and City (56-20). Grahm Goering ’21 broke the school record for the longest kick return (99 yards) on the opening kickoff against City on Sept. 4 to lead the Trojans to their fourth consecutive Battle for the Boot win.  Skip to 3:28 for more on Garrett Hartwig’s squad.

Byron Butler’s girls swim team has no intention of slowing down when they get into the pool on Sept. 26 after dominating in their first two dual meets of the year. Returning state champions and D1 commits Aurora Roghair ’21 and Scarlet Martin ’22 lead the state in seven events combined after only two meets. Alex McKane ’22 took home an individual title at the Spartan Challenge on Sept. 5 with a time of 16:25 to help lead the boys cross country team to a third-place team finish. Sophomore Vicki Carrica finished 18th overall with a time of 21:29 to lead the Women of Troy to sixth-place team finish in their first meet of the year.
