It seems like nearly every summer there’s a multitude of songs that take the airwaves by storm, blasting from the open windows of every car until people start freaking out every time it comes on. Sure, we all may be sick to death of songs like “Party Rock Anthem” and “Umbrella”, but just think about how these songs seemed to color their respective summers. Of course, it’s impossible to know what songs will be popular in week, let alone a month. But it’s never too early to start planning your new beach time playlist, so the West Side Story decided to take a shot at predicting what songs you’ll be jamming out to at your next beach party:
Group A: The Established Hits
“Call Me Maybe” – Carly Rae Jepsen
While this song has already proven to be a huge hit, it shows no signs of slowing down. It has been scientifically proven to be impossible to listen to the chorus without singing along.
“Starships” – Nicki Minaj
Yes, “starship” is not actually a word, but this song is destined to be played all summer long. Even with that weird dubstep-esque part.
“Boyfriend” – Justin Bieber
This pick is based solely off the fact that Justin Bieber NEEDS to have a big summer song. Plus, he actually does a surprisingly good Justin Timberlake impression.
Group B: On the Rise
Everything One Direction
“You Don’t Know You’re Beautiful” has already been serenading us for a couple weeks, but don’t sleep on “One Thing” either. On the other hand, they’re basically the same song, right down to rhyming a word with itself in the chorus.
“Handclaps & Guitars” – Chiddy Bang
No one can quite match the fun that Chiddy Bang manages to convey in every song they do. Also, the chorus of this song is literally “I just came to party” repeated over and over. It’s hard to go wrong there.
“Where Have You Been” – Rihanna
She needs some way to make us all forget about Battleship.
