The year is coming to an end, which means finals, projects and tons of homework. However, there are some fun things that happen this time of year, including band concerts. On May 23rd, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble gave their final concerts of the year before it was time to say farewell to the seniors.
Symphonic Band started off the concert with a beautiful fanfare called A Festival Prelude. Next, they slowed things down with Whisper to Their Souls. Popular tunes from the musical “West Side Story” were heard in A Bernstein Tribute. Finally, the band ended their portion of the concert with the exciting and upbeat piece titled Undertow.
After Symphonic Band cleared the stage, the Wind Ensemble took over. They opened their half of the concert with The Sinfonians Symphonic March, which instantly captured the attention of the audience. Next, they played Serenade Op. 22, Incantation and Dance and That’s Entertainment. All of the songs were interesting and entertaining, and were great to listen to. The band wrapped up the night with The Free Lance March.
This being the last concert, the seniors were recognized and a few individuals recieved special acknowledgement. Javon Stovall ’12 recieved the Director’s Award for Symphonic Band and Michael Aitchison ’12, who is a member of Wind Ensemble, won two awards as well. They were chosen for these awards because of their involvement in the band program and their several accomplishments throughout their four years in band.
Both bands had outstanding performances for their last concert. It was a great way to finish the year, and the seniors left on a happy note.
