WSS print co-editor-in-chief named Iowa’s Journalist of the Year
Kailey Gee now moves on to National Journalist of the Year competition
The Iowa High School Press Association and the Iowa Newspaper Foundation chose Kailey Gee ’22 as Iowa’s Journalist of the Year. Along with the honor, Gee receives a scholarship and is now eligible for the National Journalist of the Year award and scholarship, which the Journalism Education Association will reveal at the national journalism convention in Los Angeles April 7-9.
Gee created this portfolio as part of the application process. The judges had this to say about Gee: “This year’s field of candidates was loaded with talent, which makes Kailey Gee’s emergence as Journalist of the Year remarkable. Her experiences as a reporter, editor, co-leader and teammate are evident in an overall strong Iowa City West High newsroom. Her reporting and writing reveal sophistication, depth and an eagerness to tell a story that resonates with an audience.”
WSS online editor-in-chief Owen Aanestad ’22 was third place runner-up, and Jayne Abraham of Pleasant Valley High School was second runner-up.
Previous WSS alumni named Iowa’s Journalists of the Year include Natalie Dunlap in 2020 and Isabelle Robles in 2017.
