WSS website, newsmagazine place in Top 10 at national journalism convention
WSS’s social media accounts receive first place promotion award, WSS staffers win 10 other individual awards

The National Scholastic Press Association Best of Show awards were presented at the Fall National High School Journalism Convention awards ceremony, Nov. 12 in St. Louis. Wsspaper.com received fifth place website, and the October print edition received 10th place newsmagazine. Camille Gretter ’23 is the online editor-in-chief, and Krisha Kapoor ’23 and Katherine Shoppa ’23 are the print editors-in-chief.
NSPA also announced winners for its 2022 individual contests. The 2021-2022 WSS staff received first place Social Media Promotion. Social media editor Helena Wa Kalala ’23 and former co-editor-in-chief Hanah Kitamoto ’22 led staffers and curated the social media promotion to submit to this contest, viewable here. NSPA awarded 10 other national awards to WSS staffers, included here:

- Newsmagazine Page Spread second place: Will Cheng ’23 for “Silenced Speech”
- Illustration second place: Caroline Mascardo ’22 for “Find WSS”
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion fourth place: Zaira Ahmad ’24, Ella De Young ’23 and Caroline Mascardo ’22 for “Gender.”
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion fifth place: Ruba Ahmed-Abdelmutalab ’22 and Katherine Shoppa ’23 for “We are the BSU”
- Multimedia Sports Story fifth place: Owen Aanestad ’22 for “Crossing the limits”
- Portfolio of the Year — Designer of the Year honorable mention: Xiaoyi Zhu ’22
- Portfolio of the Year — Photojournalist of the Year honorable mention: Owen Aanestad ’22
- Sports Story honorable mention: Heidi Du ’23, Krisha Kapoor ’23 and Lily Prochaska ’23 for “Equal Footing”
- Multimedia Sports Story honorable mention: Owen Aanestad ’22 for “Fueling the fight”
More than 3,100 high school journalists and advisers attended the conference, with National Scholastic Press Association and Journalism Education Association as hosts.
