iJAG, or Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates, is a nonprofit organization which has a goal to inform students of the options of secondary education and the workforce. Students are able to build skills which guide them to success in their career/future after high school. This class is offered at West High to all grades, and the length is one year.
Mayor Bruce Teague visited West High today, Oct. 3, to answer questions from iJAG students. Mayor Teague is a West High alumni himself, he claims that West High had opened up various opportunities for him.“I came from all Black community. And so coming here was not only was I living in a diverse community, but the school was diverse, and I appreciated the different activities I got to engage in.”
Mayor Teague has made history as the first openly gay Black man to be elected to the Iowa City Council. “When I ran to even get on the council that was something that I found it very reassuring that I was in the right community where it didn’t matter who I was….I was accepted for who I was.”
