For the first time, the girls varsity team traveled to the Valley Southwoods Freshman High School in Des Moines to compete in the Valley Invite. Unlike their usual dual meets, West competed against three teams: Valley, Ankeny Centennial and Dowling Catholic. West doesn’t play these teams, who all qualified for the state tournament last year, during their regular season, so the Valley Invitational provided an opportunity to see how West stacks up against the Des Moines teams.
The Invitation was formatted similar to the Individual state tournament, with each school submitting two flights of singles and four flights of doubles to compete. Each submission played within their flight (ex. West 2 doubles played Valley 2 doubles), first competing in the semi-final and then either final or consolation final.
