Girls tennis competes at individual state tournament

Seniors Jay Mascardo and Mohana Sunkara competed in the individual state tournament May 26th and May 27th at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

Jay Mascardo and Mohana Sunkara qualified for the individual state tournament by placing first and second in singles respectively during the regional competition on May 10th.

In the first round of state on May 26th, Mascardo defeated Sydney Thoms of Dubuque Hempstead 6-0, 6-0, while Sunkara lost to top seed Claire Gu of West Des Moines Valley 0-6, 0-6.

Mascardo advanced to play third seed, Ava Petersen of Dowling Catholic, winning straight sets 7-5, 7-5. Sunkara played Ankeny Centennial’s Esther Guan in a consolation match, losing 2-6, 2-6.

Mascardo advanced to the semifinals on May 27th, and lost to Abbie Petersen of Ankeny Centennial  3-6, 1-6. Mascardo then played Gu, losing 3-6, 1-6, and securing a fourth-place finish at the 2023 individual state tournament.

 

Mascardo and Sunkara will compete again in the Co-Ed state tournament on June 6th at Marshalltown High School.
