Girls

Team

The girls qualified for the team state tournament May 14, taking down Ottumwa 5-0 and Waterloo West 5-1 at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex (HTRC). The girls then progressed to the first round of the state tournament, competing against Pleasant Valley May 18 also at the HTRC. After splitting singles 3-3, West clinched the match in doubles, winning 5-4. Their win moves them to the semifinals alongside Dowling Catholic, Des Moines Valley and Cedar Rapids Washington. West will compete against Dowling in the first round, then either Valley or Washington in the second match May 29.

At individual regionals May 6, the girls team qualified two entries into the individual state tournament: Maggie Shin ’24 in singles and Claire Hahn ’25/Marie Stier ’25 in doubles. The qualifiers, along with other members of the team, traveled to Johnston High School to compete in the 2A tournament May 24-25. Shin placed seventh in singles, winning her final match 6-0, 6-2.

Boys

Team

On May 11, the boys competed against Marion at the Iowa City West tennis courts, aiming to advance to the next round of state qualification. Under the hot sun at noon, the boys dominated with a 5-0 victory. Four days later, on May 15, they played against City High at the West High courts, and once again secured a 5-0 win. This victory qualified the boys for the State Team Tennis Tournament, which will take place on May 30 at Waukee Northwest High School’s tennis courts. They will first compete against Mason City at 9 a.m. If they win, they will then go on to play the winner of (Waukee Northwest/Cedar Falls) at 12 p.m.

Individual

Earlier in the month, on May 8, three of their players—Anthony Medina ’25 in singles, and Samir Singh ’24 and Patrick Selby ’24 in doubles—qualified for the state individual and doubles tournament at the HTRC. Despite some closely contested rounds, Medina did not place in singles. However, Singh and Selby excelled in doubles, ultimately securing third place overall.
