West High’s newly founded civic engagement club, NewVoters, will be holding its first voter registration drive during all lunches in the commons area from Sept. 23-27.
Students who are at least 17 years of age, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Iowa are eligible to register to vote. Seniors who register to vote can help the NewVoters club accomplish their goal of achieving the Carrie Chapman Catt Award, an initiative run by Iowa’s Secretary of State Paul Pate. Schools that successfully register 90% of their eligible senior class to vote will receive the Carrie Chapman Catt Award, and schools that register 50 and 70% of their eligible students will receive statewide recognition.
The goal of the NewVoters club is to motivate students to exercise their right to vote, regardless of their party affiliation or political views.
Those interested in joining the club or volunteering during the registration drive for Silver Cord hours can attend weekly meetings on Wednesdays after school in room 226.
If students have questions, they can contact [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected].
