After their performance at Walk It Out 2024, the West High Kpoppies are a fan favorite amongst the students. In the fall of 2023, Jessie Li ’25 and Esther Park ’25 created The Kpoppies as an official club at West High. “We were always a group for Walk It Out, just not an official West club,” Li said.
This year the club is run by Li and Abby Guo ’25. The club leaders have many plans this year. Recently, the Kpoppies were learning their new set for the homecoming pep rally. They would meet every day after school to practice their new set. Their set consists of songs like “Rockstar” by Lisa, Blackpink’s cover of “So Hot,” “I Like It” by Stray Kids and more. Due to technical difficulties, they were unable to perform at the rally.
Now the Kpoppies are practicing for their performances at Walk It Out and The annual Coralville Asian Fest in the spring.
The club has a lively and welcoming environment, where you can have fun, and make new friends. Member Jasmine Tsang ’26 joined the club this year after Li recommended it. “I made a ton of friends joining it, and we say hi to each other in the hallways and help each other with homework,” they said. One of their favorite aspects of the club is the practices. “I like our practices a lot because they’re very unserious,” they said.
A great part of the club is creating many memories. “One of my favorite memories would be recruiting new members this year and getting to know them both as people and as K-pop fans and dancers,” Li said. Tsang recalls their favorite memory being last year at Walk It Out. “All of the East Asian people met in the dance room, and we all learned it in like an hour. The dance was the second chorus of “Super Shy” by New Jeans.”
Looking forward to the year to come, the members are excited to perform and show their hard work to the students. “I hope everyone will enjoy it,” Li said. Many members are looking forward to Walk It Out this year, “I’m so excited,” Li said.
Currently, the club is on a break; they’ll officially start practices in January in preparation for their events.
