The boys soccer season started on April 4 with games on Friday and Saturday. Friday, the boys took on Ankeny Centennial, where they netted a pair of goals to win 2-1.
The goal scorers for West included Tiago Gonzalez ’26 and Steven Rodriguez ’25. One of the assists came from a new face, Mohamed Eltayeb ’27, who moved here from Dubai. The other came from returning first-team all-state member Daniel Fuentes ’25.
Fuentes, a team captain, enjoyed getting back out there this weekend but feels the team has room to improve. “We are still getting things worked out and it showed this weekend, but we will keep getting better,” Fuentes said.
On Saturday, the boys took on West Des Moines Valley, in a game where the third opponent was the weather. The game, supposed to start at 11 a.m., was pushed back an hour due to temperature concerns.
Despite the intense gameplay from both teams, the score stayed 0-0 through the first half, with West High goalkeeper Butali Butali ’25 blocking three goal attempts from Valley in the first 40 minutes.
However, with ten minutes remaining in the second half, Valley senior Kenan Sakanovic got a shot past Butali, making the score 1-0. Unfortunately, this score became the final count, leading to an early-season loss for the Trojans.
“Valley and Centennial were great games, they both showed us what we are good at but also what we need to work on,” Liam Teghanemt ’25 said.
The boys soccer team will return to West High’s Ed Barker Field on Thursday, April 10 to take on Liberty.
