Evelyn Kraber is a junior this year and the Managing and Features Editor for the website. Outside of journalism, they’re a part of Theatre West and orchestra. When not in the halls of West High, they enjoy reading, cooking and doing pretty much anything with music.

How women’s wrestling found a home in Iowa City

Towards the end of the practice, club members spent short bursts of time doing mock matches, known as “rounds“. This gives the girls a chance to use the different moves they learned in practice in a setup similar to a real match.

Freshman Noah Overholt regularly attends the club’s practices. Showing up to the club’s practices is a way for members to engage with and inspire the next generations of wrestlers.

One of the steps to performing a cradle is to have an arm around your opponents neck, similar to a headlock. These two younger club members started with that before moving toward completing the move.

When Chase asked for volunteers to demonstrate a move, multiple girls excitedly raised their hands. At the practice on Jan. 13, they practiced doing a move called the “cradle,” and two girls demonstrated for the rest of the club.

The club practice ended with a game of fox tails, which is a game similar to tag, on Jan. 13.

Although he doesn’t lead the club, girls wrestling Head Coach Michael Mettenburg helps out during practices, like assisting members with their form.
